A Hair Bow Might Help
On Monday, a stranger in an elevator mistook my daughter for a little boy. "Oh, such a cute little boy," she said. She realized her mistake on her own and added, "Oh, that's a girl, isn't it? I'm sorry."
I wasn't upset at her. Just puzzled. At the time, my daughter was wearing a shirt that had lace on the sleeves. Not typical boy attire. My husband thinks the woman thought she was a boy because she was wearing jeans. It's possible.
A stranger mistook our daughter for a boy one other time, and that day, our little girl was donning jeans, too. But she also had on a shirt with rather puffy sleeves. I would've thought the puffy sleeves would offset any boyishness conveyed by the jeans, but perhaps not.
